i. General introduction

Styrene-Butadiene or Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR) is a synthetic rubber copolymer consisting of styrene and butadiene.

It has good abrasion resistance and good aging stability when protected by additives, and is widely used in car tires, where it is blended with natural rubber.

ii. History

It was originally developed prior to World War II in Germany, but during the War was used extensively by the USA to replace natural rubber supplies from the far-east, that had been captured by the Japanese.

Buna S The material was initially marketed with the brand name Buna S. It derives this name from: Bu for butadiene, Na for sodium (natrium in Latin, Natrium in German), and S for styrene.

iii. Production process

SBR can be produced from solution or as emulsion. In both instances, the reaction is via free radical polymerization. Pressure reaction vessels are required and usually charged with the two monomers, a free radical acid and a chain transfer agent such as an alkyl mercaptan. The latter prevents high molecular weight and high viscosity product from forming. High styrene-content rubbers are hard, since the glass transition temperature of polybutadiene is extremely low. The production process is initiated by sodium.

It is not to be confused with a thermoplastic elastomer made from the same monomers, styrene-butadiene block copolymer.

iv. Properties

Glass transition temperature approximately

Major application characteristics: good physical properties; excellent abrasion resistance; but sensitive to oil, wastewater and ozone; electrical properties good, but not outstanding

v. Applications

SBR is used widely in pneumatic tires, shoe heels and soles, gaskets and even chewing gum. It is a commodity material which competes with natural rubber. Latex (emulsion) SBR is extensively used in coated papers, being one of the most cost-effective resins to bind pigmented coatings. It is also used in building applications, as a sealing and binding agent behind renders as an alternative to PVA, but is more expensive.

In the latter application, it offers better durability, reduced shrinkage and increased flexibility, as well as being resistant to emulsification in damp conditions.

SBR can be used to ‘tank‘ damp rooms or surfaces, a process in which the rubber is painted onto the entire surface (sometimes both the walls, floor and ceiling) forming a continuous, seamless damp proof liner; a typical example would be a basement. Additionally, it is used in some rubber cutting boards.

Although Chinese chlorinated polyethylene (CPE/CM) manufacturers dominate the chlorinated polyethylene market, whose are the biggest manufacturers and consumers in the world, yet there are many steps to take to be a leader of the chlorinated polyethylene world.

There are some of ideas from WestMoonint for Chinese chlorinated polyethylene manufacturers.

Solid process manufacturing should be expanded among all manufacturers. Comparing with suspension process manufacturing, solid process manufacturing enable to reduce three wastes emissions (waste gas, waste water and industrial residue), manufacturing cost lightly attack the equipments, but increase grades. And the agglutinating and sintering processing has been fixed jointly by manufacturers and universities; therefore solid process will make more progress.

Expand the scale of production, enhance quality and reduce manufacturing cost; meanwhile balance grades development.

Expand more international market share but enhance economic benefits. And the targeted market are American, EU, Japanese and South Korean and south Asian; and these markets should be invested more marketing and sales resource.

Accelerate the research and development of active agents, for such active agents are depended on importing, therefore, the additional importing cost could puts added manufacturing cost.

These polymers are used as the major and/or minor component in a wide assortment of applications in industry. The largest application for CPE is as an impact modifier. Other important end-use applications for CPE include wire and cable jacketing, roofing membranes, geomembranes, automotive and industrial hose and tubing, coated fabrics, molded shapes, extruded profiles, and use as a base polymer.

Chlorinated polyethylene global consumption

China is the world leader in terms of chlorinated polyethylene nameplate capacity, accounting for 83% of capacity. The last decade was clearly marked with a rapid buildup of CPE capacity in China. Total world capacity for CPE is forecast to drop following the closure of Dow’s CPE unit in the United States, further increasing the Chinese share of CPE capacity.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of chlorinated polyethylene:

China and the United States were the two largest consumers of chlorinated polyethylene in 2008. In China, roughly 75–80% of the CPE consumed is used for impact modification of PVC for door/window profiles, pipes/drainage applications, and certain styrene copolymers. The other 20–25% of CPE consumed is used in flexible sheeting for roofing applications, electrical wires and cables, and other rubber product uses (e.g., oil hoses and seals, and new applications). In the United States, 80–90% of CPE consumed is for impact modification and the rest is for other uses including, but not limited to, wire and cable jacketing, roofing applications, automotive and industrial hose/tubing and molded shapes.

World consumption of CPE is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of about 4%. This slower growth will be due mainly to the slowdown in the global housing markets and world economic recession during 2008–2009. CPE consumption in Europe (driven mainly by Central and Eastern Europe), the Middle East/Africa, China and Other is expected to grow at average annual rates of 1.0%, 4.0%, 6.0% and 2.5%, respectively, while the United States and Japan will show a decrease in consumption in the forecast period from 2008 to 2013.

Chlorasulfonated polyethylene elastomers properties

Chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers have excellent resistance to ozone, heat, weather, oxygen, oils and other fluids; exhibit great colorability and color stability; show high tensile strength and abrasion resistance; have excellent electrical insulating properties; and have low flammability characteristics. They are superior to polychloroprene in overall properties, and inferior to, but more cost-effective than, silicone or fluoroelastomers.

Chlorasulfonated polyethylene elastomers applications

Compared with chlorinated polyethylene, chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers exhibit better mechanical properties and abrasion resistance. Both chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers and chlorinated polyethylene can be cross-linked by peroxides or radiation curing, but chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers can also be cross-linked by metal oxides, sulfur-bearing organic compounds and epoxy resins. Because of their unique set of properties, chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers have been adopted in many applications in a vast assortment of industries, such as the construction sector (roofing membranes, pond and reservoir liners), automotive sector (hoses, tubing and belts), industrial products sector (seals, belts, linings, printing rolls and linings for tanks), wire and cable sector, and other (molded goods and articles, coatings and adhesives).

Chlorasulfonated polyethylene elastomers global consumption.

As of early 2009, DuPont Performance Elastomers holds most of the market share in terms of nameplate capacity for chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers, representing nearly 90% of the global share. The market position of the three chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomer producers remained unchanged during 2005–2008. China was the only country to add capacity during 1997–2004; it commissioned a chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomer plant in September 2004 with an annual capacity of 3 thousand metric tons.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers:

The driving force behind chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomer consumption in the world is the automotive sector. The United States, Western Europe, Japan and China combined consumed nearly one-fourth of total world consumption of chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers in their respective automotive industries in 2008. The second-largest market is construction applications in roofing membranes and liners for ponds and reservoirs.

The current global economic recession, especially significant in the United States (since the United States is the largest consumer of chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomers), will dampen consumption growth in the forecast period from 2008 to 2013.
